Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
